Why Steel Buildings have become so POPULAR?
Why Steel Buildings have become so POPULAR?
Steel buildings are becoming an increasingly popular choice for commercial and industrial construction. While they offer many benefits, a common question is whether these structures are energy efficient. In this blog post, we will explore three aspects of energy efficiency in these types of buildings: insulation, heating/cooling systems, and design.

Insulation

Proper insulation is key to energy efficiency in any building. Steel buildings can be insulated as well as traditional buildings when the right materials are used. Our single-skin sheet cladding also has an internal, anti-condensation lining that helps pull moisture out of the atmosphere inside the building, thereby mitigating any dampness. Composite, or insulated cladding, is much more effective. Our suppliers recommend a minimum of 80mm composite cladding on the roof and 60mm composite cladding on the walls. In some cases, insulated cladding may make buildings  better insulated than wood or concrete structures due to the seamless insulation that can be achieved.

Heating and Cooling Systems

The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems used in steel buildings also play a role in energy efficiency. When designed and installed properly, HVAC systems can be very efficient in steel buildings. Options like radiant heating, evaporative cooling, and high-efficiency heat pumps work well for steel structures. Automated temperature controls and zoning the building into different areas also help reduce energy usage.

Building Design

The overall design of a steel building contributes significantly to its energy efficiency. Features like sloped roofs and skylights provide natural lighting to reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day. Proper ventilation and airflow also help control the temperature in the building. In some cases, the steel frame of the building can even be used to harness solar or wind energy to power parts of the building. While steel buildings are often perceived as inefficient, they can actually be designed and built to be very energy efficient. With the proper insulation, HVAC systems, and architectural design, these types of buildings have the potential to be highly efficient and environmentally friendly structures. With their many benefits and energy efficiency, steel buildings are a smart choice for commercial and industrial projects. Contact us today on 01302 301402 or get a quote for your own steel building direct to your inbox by filling in our quote request form.
